In 2014, Australian academics published analysis of suicide and employment status for the decade from 2001 to 2010. The key findings are listed in the table below.

Group Rate of suicide
Economically inactive/unemployed males 57.7 per 100,000
Employed males 10.5 per 100,000
Economically inactive/unemployed females 20.2 per 100,000
Employed females 2.2 per 100,000

These figures show that:

  • Employed males are nearly 5 times more likely to suicide than employed females
  • Unemployed males are around 26 times more likely to suicide than employed females
